Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) automatically handles configuration/management of network devices, but, uses the SSDP Discovery Service which may expose your computer to undesirable internet elements. Unless you are using a UPnP network device Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is probably undesirable. (Patches to fix this security hole are available.) Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) -enable driverless auto-configuring network devices/services. Five step process; Discovery -device announces it's presence to the network and gives information about itself, Description -computer(control point) recives more descriptive information about the device via URL given from previous(discovery) phase, Control -Control points use additional information about how to interface with the device via URL's from previous(description) phase, Eventing -messages from device are sent to control point pertaining to device status changes, Presentation -Browser(Windows Explorer) is able to view/manage device settings.
