- Write originally was a word processing tool that was included with older versions of the Windows Operating System (OS). Write can edit binary files (files with these extensions: exe, dll) as long as byte length of file is not changed. In order to enable backward compatibility write.exe is still included with most versions of Windows Operating System (OS)s as a command line entry to open Wordpad.exe.
